The Queen’s Cream Tea – Celebrating her Majesty’s 90th Birthday

April 21st, 2016

We had a lovely time in the garden this afternoon celebrating The Queen’s 90th Birthday.

The children wore crowns which they had made at home or at nursery. We all met in the garden to enjoy sandwiches, crudities, scones with jam and cream and … birthday cake!

The children listened to the National Anthem and sang Happy Birthday before we blew out the candles. We had to explain lots of times to the children that unfortunately Her Majesty was unable to attend after the children kept asking where she was!

The children had been learning about the Royal Family this week. The Sunlight’s had been looking at photographs of both the family and also her residencies. We explained that The Queen was very lucky to have at least three ‘houses!’

The Coach House have made Queen Elizabeth a birthday card which has been posted to Buckingham palace! I wonder if she will reply ….

One of our parent’s also brought The Sunlight Room a present of a castle and knights which the children really enjoyed playing with.

A lovely day was had by all and we must thank Julie, our assistant cook for baking the cake.

Makaton

At the nursery we use makaton when communicating with the children. Makaton is signs and symbols which help children to communicate. We reinforce speech with the signs.

All staff aim to use makaton, with three of our staff highly trained in this area. Songtime is a good opportunity to use makaton as the children love to use actions.

Please speak to our Baby Room team should you wish to learn of the signs to use with your children.

Planting and growing

March 18th, 2016

The children have been learning all about flowers as Spring seems to be here … finally!

The Coach House have been using their computer to look at the life cycle of a flower and how the seeds reproduce. The Sunlight’s and Holly Room have been drawing flowers and looking at the different parts. Some of the children have tried to label their drawings.

In the garden we have large planters. Each room has a planter and have been helping David to plant colourful pansies. The children have been learning how to use the garden tools safely and how to water the flowers to help them to grow.

Come and have a look!

Our new construction site

March 17th, 2016

089

We have a new ‘construction area’ in our outside area. The children have been acting as builder’s and using all our new equipment to develop their imagination.

The area provides a variety of areas for development. the children have been taking their learning further by creating situations to act out with their friends. There was a ‘hole in the road’ which required the builders to fill it will sand after doing lots of drilling. The children were using lots of mathematical and positional language, “it’s too heavy”, “It needs to go on top”. The children were laying out cones and counting, therefore using number names spontaneously.

The play was being extended by others as they joined the group and took on a role. The children’s ideas were elaborated by their peers and children began to play co-operatively.

We would still like to develop this area further, if you have any ideas, please let us know.

World Book Day

March 4th, 2016

The children had lots of fun celebrating World Book Day. They dressed up like characters from their favourite story books and brought the book to share with their friends.

Different activities took place around the nursery. The Holly Room and Sunlight Room made a troll bridge across the mud using a wooden plank and all joined in saying ‘who’s that trip trapping over my bridge’. Playdough was used to make the Three Little Pigs and other props from the story. As Thomas the Tank Engine arrived via costume, the children made train tracks.

The Rainbow Room shared all their stories with each other and the Coach House used the opportunity to tell their friends about the story they had brought. One of the children had a Thunderbirds book as their favourite. This led to the preschool children using the computer to research Marionettes , what they are and how they move. They then did a music and movement session being puppets.

Although only little, the Babies joined in the fun and dressed up too. Spot the Dog and the fairy from ‘That’s not my Fairy’ made an appearance!

Outdoor Area

February 26th, 2016

We have been shopping and bought lots of new exciting resources for our outdoors. The children love all the opportunities that our outside area provides.

We have bought lots of new material to create dens with and the children have been crawling through the dens and hiding inside. A new pirate ship has been made with a skull and crossbones flag and the children can use the telescopes to look for islands. You may also hear ‘abracadabra’ as a new cauldron allows the children to create magic spells and potions.

Larger scale junk modelling allows the children to develop their imagination through building. If you have any building materials such as wooden planks, drainpipes, tree stumps or crates we would love to take them of your hands!

Our garden provides a lovely area for learning and development to take place and we are always improving it and looking for ideas!
